Vienna Lang Artist Statement and C.V.
Vienna Lang Artist Statement.
My artistic journey is intricately woven with the spiritual relationship to nature and the human experience. I work with painting, crafts, collage, photography, and multimedia to create artworks that are inspired by nature, colour, spirituality, and beautiful things. My artworks serve as visual narratives, embodying a profound reverence for nature and an unwavering belief in the preciousness of Earth. My passion extends to preserving Canada's landscapes, propelling me to explore national and provincial parks in a perpetual quest to uphold their natural splendour. Through my lens, I use photography as a way to capture the vivid scenes of landscapes, serving as visual narratives.
The study of spirituality within Earth is vital in understanding my artistic narrative. Visual elements such as the human body, landscapes, and textured objects symbolize humanity’s connection to Earth. Colour is an important factor in this theme, as it references the vibrant colours in Mother Nature’s colour pallet. My art is bold through its use of vibrant colours that demand attention from the viewer. Colour reflects the magic of childhood, a theme I most often seek to resemble in my artwork. Glitter, gems, crystals and shiny materials are elements that I use to evoke the childhood feeling of magic and excitement within nature.
The colours, textures and movement of nature - i.e. plants, water, sunlight, and landscapes - are key features I seek to encapsulate within my art. These visually pleasing elements inspire my use of materials within collage and multimedia art. For example, yarn and string create visual movement within an artwork that mimics the motion of water or waves. Sand, pebbles, and seashells create texture while also engaging the artwork with natural material. Often I upcycle collected material that would have otherwise been thrown away because, as the saying goes, one man's trash is another man's treasure. I refer to my material collection as my treasure chest for this reason, I do not like waste and I can always find potential in craft materials.
I am a crafter in every aspect of my life. I use craft to create functional art as well as vibrant, bold visual art. As an artist, I can’t help but consider every object’s potential as craft material. Nature inspires all of my art as either a visual aid for painting and photography or physical material for collage and multimedia pieces. Creativity is boundless and there are no limitations in craft.
